Telling Tales: Week 4

In order to determine the difference from the character and the background, the side characters as well, I decided to make the whale by water colour on paper, which creates the hand-made effect, having similar quality to the background but make the digital animated character stands out at the same time.

The whales I painted for the animation are shown below, to make the side character unique, which is the whale that the girl sits on, I made the colour with more purple to make it a darker whale that stands out of the other whales.

Starting with one of the scenes, I used After Effect to rig the whales firstly, and added the background of the sky which moves slowly backward of the direction that the whales are swimming towards. I also tend to paint a background in Photoshop to compare the different effect it creates compare to the water colour.

Telling Tales: Week 3

This version of the character was originally done for the study task puppet tools, however I decided to design another character, therefore it became a reference of the character while animating it on computer. I also thought about making the animation by rigging this character drawn on paper, but finally came to the conclusion that the movement in the plan of the animation is far more complicated for it if I used this and tried to rig it in After Effects.

Telling Tales: Week 2

From the initial ideas, I have came to this decision, a narrative of a girl sitting on a blue whale among other whales on the sky, which was developed from the first idea I came up with the title Adrift. For the character, I developed two version that one is a 5 years old girl while the other is the grown up version of her, which is about 25 years old. The side character would be the whale that the girl sits on, and the sketch is what I think the whale would look like in the animation.

This is the storyboard I did for the project, and the animatic with a single background music, which will be change in the following production of the animation.

Telling Tales: Week 1

Nine titles were given for the brief, which four of them captured my interests. I had a brain storm and generated a few ideas initially, which are adrift, leap of faith, opposites attract and road to nowhere.

A sketch of the idea generated from the title Road to Nowhere

Focusing on the title Adrift, I spreaded my thoughts of adrift  of mind, on sky or on ocean, and had the first idea of a story about a character after a long adrift discovered himself woke up in the hospital with his family surrounding, and the fact is he suffered a coma after a car crush, the main concept of the animation is an unreal jouney of the character travels in a unexist space. Therefore it would be a small boat floating on sky through the clouds, where several strange scenes happened.
