In order to
determine the difference from the character and the background, the side
characters as well, I decided to make the whale by water colour on paper, which
creates the hand-made effect, having similar quality to the background but make
the digital animated character stands out at the same time.
The whales I painted for the animation are shown below, to make the side character unique, which is the whale that the girl sits on, I made the colour with more purple to make it a darker whale that stands out of the other whales.
Starting with one of the scenes, I used After Effect to rig the whales firstly, and added the background of the sky which moves slowly backward of the direction that the whales are swimming towards. I also tend to paint a background in Photoshop to compare the different effect it creates compare to the water colour.
